Leave your detailsWhat a good trainer does for this goal
Training for a race means building endurance, strength and pacing on a plan that fits your week. A good trainer for this goal will ask about your race, your distance and your current running or training habits before they write anything. They will build up your mileage gradually, add strength work to help you stay injury-free, and show you how to pace on race day.
When you write your brief, include the race you are aiming for and the date. Say how far you can currently run or cycle, and how many sessions a week you can manage. Tell the trainer about any injuries or past problems, and whether you want to train at a gym, at home or online. If you have a health condition or an injury, check with your GP or physio before you start hard training.
Common questions
Do I need to be fit already before I train for a race?
Not always, but you should be able to do some regular activity. A trainer will assess where you are now and build from there. Say honestly what you can do in your brief.
How long before a race should I start working with a trainer?
It depends on the distance and how much you have trained before. Put your race date in your brief so trainers can tell you whether there is enough time to prepare well.
Should I tell a trainer about an old injury?
Yes. Include any injury or condition in your brief and tick the box to share it with the trainers you choose. Only include the details a trainer needs to train you safely.
