Getting fit for your health is about steady, safe progress. A good trainer starts by asking about your health history, your routine and what you want to change. They build sessions that suit where you are now, check how you are coping, and adjust the plan as you go.
Your brief should cover your goal in your own words, where you would like to train (at a gym, at home or online), and when you are free. Include anything a trainer should know, such as past injuries, conditions or medication that affects exercise. Only share what a trainer needs to train you safely.
Some health information is sensitive, so you will be asked to tick a box agreeing it can be passed to the trainers you choose. If you have a medical condition, check with your GP or physio before starting, and tell your trainer what they have advised.
Common questions
Do I need a doctor's permission before I train?
If you have a condition, recent illness or any concern about exercise, check with your GP first. Tell your trainer what they have said so they can plan around it.
What should I include about my health in my brief?
Mention anything relevant to safe training, such as injuries, conditions or medication. Leave out details that a trainer does not need. You choose which trainers receive this information.
Can a trainer work with me if I have a health condition?
Trainers can only give you exercise guidance, not medical advice. If your condition needs specialist input, ask your GP or physio, and let your trainer know what they recommend.
